I came into the swift ward to have a complete shoulder reconstruction and whilst the discomfort after the operation was nigh on unbearable I can't thank the staff enough. They were calming, thoughtful and incredibly professional. Please pass on my eternal thanks to the doctors, anaesthetists and nurses who have made an extremely difficult experience manageable.

Review of A&E (Majors/Minors) (Epsom)
19th March 2013

Some Doctors and some nurses working in the children's A&E need to be made aware that they are treating children and not adults. It is normal for young children to not co-operate with examinations and wanting to go home after waiting for hours to be attended to. A caring manner and approach would help gain the reassurance of young children. Children have probably never been to a hospital in their life before and scared of the unknown.

I cannot fault the care that I received on Swift Ward at Epsom General Hospital last week following a vaginal hysterectomy and prolapse repair. All the staff without exception, both day and night, were extremely caring, particularly Sister Kathy. I do however have a critisim of the toilet facilities on the ward. There were only 2 toilets for quite a large number of patients. The nearest toilet to my bay contained the shower and was often occupied. The only other toilet was quite a walk after major surgery and had a very heavy door The main thing you are told to avoid after a hysterectomy is lifting and this heavy door was definitely much too heavy for a hysterectomy patient.

I have recently had an operation at the Epsom General Hospital. I am very grateful for the treatment and care I received and can write a very positive report now 2 months later, having recovered well with no complications. I would have love to have answered all the above questions with a 100% rating, but I could only put down 95%. I felt it would be helpful if I speak of my somewhat negative experience on the day that I was discharged. I felt the communication wasn't very clear about arrangements for going home. One after the other nurse came in with hints, expressing their surprise that I was still in the room. One suggested I get a cab, after I have already made it clear that they should tell me the time that my husband should come to pick me up. I think just as there was one nurse in charge to make me feel at home in the room and going through the procedures at the time of admission, there could be one person in charge of ensuring the patient is seen to with regards going home arrangements - so that there is no room for misunderstanding. I in the end walked to the patient's lounge with the content of my beside cupboard stuffed into a plastic bag, carrying a heavy vase of flowers myself. This was barely two days after I had a total abdominal hysterectomy. I sat in the lounge for a time with the lady who was about to be admitted to the room and bed I had to leave in a hurry. I was happy for her that her wait was over, but I had to wait for another half an hour sitting upright and feeling very uncomfortable until I could be picked up. My husband found it tricky to get a wheelchair as they were in short supply, but we finally got home. I am taking the time to write this, purely because I hope that it will help for someone else in future to go have a smoother 'going home' from hospital.

I recently required an operation at Epsom General Hospital. I cannot speak highly enough concerning the level of care I received, from my first contact with admissions, who were very helpful , thru to my Pre Operative appointment, then the various outpatient departments and up onto the ward. On the wards, the level of care couldn’t be faltered; the nurses were professional, friendly, considerate and kind. I have only one area that I feel needs improvement, and that is the automated ‘reminder’ of an upcoming appointment. On answering the phone a long pause was first experienced, leading me to think that the caller had hung up. This was followed by a chiming sound, which had me thinking it was someone selling something! I was just about to hang up myself, when a recorded voice message alerted me for the need to confirm my appointment. If the introduction to this call could be improved the service would be ideal. Continuing on with a positive note, I was also offered an opportunity to attend a two hour course on how to maintain my health after the operation, this was invaluable, and a service that not only educated me, but offered me the chance to maintain my health over the longer term – truly forward thinking! This is the first time I have used the NHS, and I was truly impressed with my level of care, thank you.

I had my first child at Epsom Hospital on the 3rd December. The Early Pregnancy Department were amazing and during labour I received such amazing care from Jo the Midwife in the Labour suite. After suffering a post cesearean hemorrhage and losing 7ltrs of blood words cannot describe how professional and calm the labour ward staff were and how encouraging they were at such a scary time. Miss Ammar is an absolute gem, the world needs more amazing people like her! After my blood transfusion and being sent to Intensive Care, the treatment I received was impeccable. Sheila ensured I was reunited with my son at the earliest opportunity and helped wash and cloth me. Thank you. All the midwives on the Simon Stewart ward again were amazing and caring and did their upmost to ensure that everything would be ok which it was. My experience at Epsom may have been a traumatic one due to my labour but the staff that cared for me were angels! Thank you for everything you are spectacular

I was in hospital for 3 days and was looked after very well. I had my own room and bathroom which was amazing. I was on Swift ward for short term and day patients and cannot fault it. It was quiet and calming which certainly helped with my recovery
